Pat Barry
Pat Barry boxed out of New York until he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. After a professional boxing career, he became an officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and achieved the rank of detective. He retired recently. He met his wife Dawn, herself a Metro officer, in Las Vegas and the two have been married since 1978. They have one daughter who is married to former boxer Augie Sanchez.
Currently, he is a boxing trainer in Las Vegas, Nevada at the gym he and his wife Dawn started, Barry’s Boxing. He trained former world champion Clarence (Bones) Adams. He also trained Augie Sanchez, Diego Magdaleno, Jesse Magdaleno and a long list of amateur champions.
He appeared in the film “Play It to the Bone”.
Augie Sanchez
Augustine Anthony Sanchez (born November 17, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.) is a boxing trainer and retired featherweight boxer. As an amateur boxer, he was the US featherweight champion and known for being the last American to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Augie Sanchez was a stellar amateur boxer, highlighted by his winning the 1996 United States Amateur Featherweight title. He defeated Floyd Mayweather in the Olympic Trials in one of their three amateur bouts.
Professional Career
Known as “Kid Vegas”, Sanchez turned professional in 1996. As a professional Sanchez was able to achieve a very successful record of 28-3 (25 wins by way of KO). He was considered a very hard puncher, which was highlighted in his high-profile championship fight with Naseem Hamed.
Boxing Coach
“Once I retired, that’s when I started coaching amateur, getting my certifications and devoted myself to the program and teaching the young kids and helping them. It made me start reaching for another goal as a coach,” said Augie Sanchez.
Augie has coached amateur boxers at Barry’s Boxing Club for over 20 years and traveled with international teams since 2004. In 2016, Augie was named an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s national team for the Olympics in Rio.
In 2018, Augie was promoted to USA Boxing’s National Junior and Youth Coach. He is responsible for overseeing the development and performance of USA Boxing’s Junior and Youth National teams, as well as preparing junior and youth boxers to make a successful transition from the grassroots level to the elite ranks.
He trains his fighters at Barrys Boxing Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is married to the daughter of the owners Pat and Dawn Barry.
